What's better than a free lunch?

It's the age old question really, like why is the planet round or why is the sky blue... ok, those questions can be answered by science and logic, just like what's better than a free lunch. The answer? Ice cream with your free lunch ofcourse! Click to zoom in...  if you dare!!
This is by far the {messiest} looking treat I have ever posted. You could definitely say I went a smidge bit nutty, but when presented with a giant table full of treats and a bunch of crazy coworkers, well what was I suppose to do? Underneath that mess is a big lump of neapolitan ice cream. What's on top is whip cream, crushed heath bar, a few chocolate chips and white chocolate chips, a crushed waffle bowl for crunch, some M&Ms, sprinkles (because sprinkles rock!), some chocolate sauce.... and then some strawberry sauce to be on the safe side. There was also walnuts and almonds which I did not go for, but there were some mini desserts so I threw the brownie in for good measure. Since we didn't have any cherries, I decided to top mine with a mini Reese's peanut but cup.

Diagnosis: waayyyyyyyyyyyyy too sweet! The strawberries with the Smuckers chocolate sauce were way too much. Actually, it was probably more the sauce then the strawberries. The waffle bowl was good but the brownie was the star of the show. Looking back I wish I had thrown in 3 or 4 of them on the bottom to start off with.

Oh man, writing that sentence just made me hungry again...

I'm sure the calorie count ain't pretty so let's just say it's a good thing I had a bunch of manual stuff to do today because otherwise I probably would have faded off to nap time like all of my fellow desk jockeys. Thanks to my work for the decent lunch followed by a most excellent dessert table that put a smile on everyone's face.

On Second Scoop: There are plenty of leftovers so I had myself another (more moderate) bowl yesterday. I figured out what that weird taste was. It's the cheap and horribly artificial strawberry price-rite ice cream!

The smile of ice cream-a unique phenomenon

I love seeing people eat gelato-because they invariably smile! And it is a smile different from other, you will see. It is shown that last summer in an ice-cream, my blog when I wrote a post called ' the castle of gelato smiling faces ' characterised the wonderful small gelateria eastnor Castle. People of all ages were happy to be photographed eating their ice cream and not one of them had a straight face!

I think this is a unique phenomenon to ice cream.

And if you need more proof, just look at this….

"Sweet little Dylan Robinson caught on camera by his father Paul, happily tucks in an ice cream cone.

Without a care in the world for which ends-his nose and face, hands, his highchair, or even on the floor where apparently the faithful family dog patiently waits tour Nelly-the look on his face is without a doubt what I call ....

Thoughts of Halloween & Ice Cream

18 July is the Festival of ice cream

Is again July! 4th of July celebrations always include gelato-well unless what my readers tell me. Is the single most important day of the year for downloads of recipes from my ice cream recipes site.

July is national ice cream month and this year on July 18 is the festa del gelato.

I don't know about it? shame on you! Te ?educated? and can read my page national ice cream month & ice cream party.

My knowledge of political history can be a bit bumpy, but if there's one thing I know, is that we have Ronald Reagan to thank for the national ice cream month.

So don't hold back this July .... go out with friends and family and enjoy an ice cream in the park or take it for a treatment of a gelateria. then on a sunny day when you decide to have a barbecue, invite a few guests extra to come and enjoy some homemade ice cream. here are the recipes top 10 most downloaded from my website.

The ice cream is fun! labels: national ice cream day, national ice cream month

The best vanilla ice cream

Like many people, I like vanilla ice cream. I've done since I was a child. So no wonder it is the recipe of an ice cream that I like to do above all others. The interesting thing is that even with the same recipe, the results are never 100% identical. Most people probably wouldn't notice the difference, but when you have done and tasted like vanilla ice much as I, even a small difference can stand.

My latest batch of homemade vanilla ice cream was one of the best I've ever done ... No, I'm not be presumptuous ... asking my family, everyone has said before me:

Here are 2 pictures of it.

The first (above) was taken after a couple of scoop of service at my favorite penny lick glass and the second (out in the garden, then light) after you put a ball in an ice cream cone and sprinkled of several hundred thousands atop. delicious!

I tried to work out why it was so good, and the only thing I can give is that maybe the quality vanilla pod used was a bit special somehow. Only the taste of vanilla in the ice cream that day seemed to be stronger and more aromatic.

Well, what was, I hope that I can do it again next time! labels: ice cream cone of 1 million dollars, homemade ice cream, ice cream maker, vanilla, vanilla pod

Guest Bloggers

I've been meaning to write this post for a week now, so my apologies to the upcoming guest bloggers. As much as I love ice cream, this site isn't just about me, it's about everyone's love of cold treats. I probably don't say it enough, but I really do encourage each and every one of you to be a part of this blog. Sure, I'm a fan of my own opinion, but your contribution really does help us all out when you comment with a second opinion of your own. Thanks for your past, present and future help!

With that being said, let me talk about our bloggers a little bit. First up is an official visit from book author and fellow blogger Steff Deschenes. She has come up with the excellent idea of hosting a virtual book tour to support the fun read known as "The Ice Cream Theory". No, it's not about making ice cream, but rather a very unique way of how she relates her life to how she thinks about different flavors of ice cream. She will be here on Monday, October 25th and has promised a review of something seasonal (as in something I'd probably be afraid to review).

Our other two guest bloggers have graciously accepted my Perry's Ice Cream coupons in exchange for writing a review for all of us to enjoy. Now I'm going to let them introduce themselves when the time comes, but the great thing is they are seeing Perry's from two different sides. One reviewer has grown up with Perry's and will be checking out their new Gelato offerings. Our other reviewer is from my area and so I don't think he has much experience with Perry's. I'm pretty excited because I'm hoping to get two unique perspectives here. My thanks to both of them in advance.

If this goes well, maybe we can get some other people on the blog.

Now as a side note (you know I love 'em), I got an email from one of the Perry reviewers saying they picked up some new treats from Wegmans. I then just so happened to open up google news, and what do I see? Wegman's first store coming to Massachusetts! One has to assume that they will be bringing Perry's with them and who know's what else! It's not some place I can hit on the way home, but I can definitely bring my cooler full of ice packs and hopefully pick up some new treats --- side note to the side note: I probably shouldn't get too excited since the store isn't open 'til Fall of 2011.

(there should be a few new posts coming this weekend, stay tuned)

Toppings: Smuckers Chocolate Sundae Syrup

Time for a chocolate rush people! I've never officially reviewed Smuckers Fat Free Chocolate Syrup so it seems like I should do it when I have these free samples at my disposal --- There's some Caramel samples too, but I've already (cheesily) reviewed caramel before.
So I dumped way too much chocolate syrup onto of the worst ice cream ever made and decided to see how it tastes. I had a few straight little scoops of just syrup and it's pretty potent, but the thing is, I'm not sure I could really tell the difference between this and hersey's syrup if I was blindfolded. I had a few bites with the ice cream but this awful ice cream is driving me nuts. I decided to let it melt a little bit and stirred to the whole thing up into an overly chocolate milkshake (which I already kind of regret).

Do I like it? Well, it's not that it's bad, but I think any true ice cream topping needs to stand up on it's own. I'm pretty sure if I were to take too many bites of this stuff, I would probably.... not feel well shall we say. It's not like you could drink this and be going "mmmm, it's like liquid chocolate", but technically I could count this as a postitive since it prevents me from downing one of these as my afternoon snack everyday. I know it's meant to accent whatever you are eating, that it's not meant to be had on it's own, so it's a fine typical topping, I just don't think it's anything special. At least it's super easy to pour!

Friday Night Fight Popsicle brand Jell-o Pudding Pops

Housecleaning #5: Ok, who here is old enough to remember these?

I was preparing to do my tonight's post when I ran across this comparison from fourth grade nothing. Ally is right when she says that tonight's product is nothing like the original. The originals were just awesome. They were a nice, big, proud frozen pudding that was a great snack. I want to say I was a big fan of the vanilla & chocolate swirl ones. I can still remember ripping open a box (just wish I could find a picture of one... here is another post complaining about the new pops). Ok, enough reminscing. Just like before we have 3 flavors. Chocolate, Vanilla, and Chocolate & Vanilla. That's a skinny cow on the left, then chocolate, swirl, and vanilla. They definitely don't have the old shape.

Now I've gone through the flavors twice now and I just don't like them. I think the Vanilla is the worst with it's artificial, cake batter like sweet flavor. It reminds me nothing of jello. The swirl benefits from the chocolate, but I still don't like it. Chocolate is ok.... at best. It's just that these things are such a bitter disappointment after spending so many great nights with the originals. Back in the day you would have one and be happy, sometimes you go back for a second. All these do is make me said and do nothing to satisfy my hunger.

for good measure I will  polish off the last one as I write this paragraph. I remember the old ones having a bit of a solidness to them, almost as if they had a glaze of ice on them. These new ones are soft, real soft. The chocolate does taste a bit like a pudding cup, and it's almost as soft. Here, let me prove it in pictures.

That stain on the top is the skinny cow bar which I put out first. The bottom puddle is the pudding pop which I unwrapped second. Now that's just crazy melting if you ask me. Oh, I'm done the pop already. There's just no resistance from the pop and it disappeared in what? 90 seconds. A pudding pop is meant to be cherished, not slurped up like some cheap milkshake. I guess you could argue that the liquidy nature of the pudding pop does a better job of coating your taste buds with faux chocolate flavor.

As a disclaimer, I'm pretty sure I'm being kind of hard on these treats since I am not only sad that they got rid of the originals, but offended that these are the replacements. My daughter was still more than happy to dig into the box, and my wife thought they were decent.

Tonight's winner : Skinny Cow : I'll take two of theirs over one of these any day.

True Winner : The original Jell-O pudding pop

The losers: The cheezy remake, and therefore us, the deprived consumer.

New! Walgreens Belgian Chocolate Chip Delight lowfat Ice Cream

I've said it before and I'll say it again: "Yes, Walgreens (the pharmacy) makes their own ice cream". In fact, they are now branching out with no sugar added and light ice creams (there was a fair sized sticker on the freezer pointing this fact out). Now I believe that they've started out with just two delight flavors: Vanilla and Belgian Chocolate Chip. Let's dig in!
Walgreens Belgian Chocolate Chip DelightIt's Lowfat Chocolate Ice Cream with Chocoalte Flavored Chips(disclaimer, the pint's been sitting in my lunch bag for a good 20 minutes already, and my cold packs are really just cool packs at this point... feels kinda squishy) It's got a plastic seal on top, nice touch, good start
Just 110 calories per serving...  looks spongy
(and the chips aren't making a good first impression here)
ok, my first bite and wow, that's chocolaty alright!

chocolate chips are pretty small -- thin & 1/4" long at most --- actually, I guess they aren't that thin, at least not all of them (maybe 1/8" thick)

boy we've got alot of air in here, and since it's warmed up a bit, it's not really putting up any resistance (as in very soft, not very thick or creamy)

it's not bad if you can get several chips in your scoop because they distract you from the boringness of the base, but otherwise it's not doing alot for me.

I'm settling into the chocolate now. It was a little offputting at first but I'm getting use to it

#5 ingredient is coconut oil, #7 is butter oil.... I can't say I'm really noticing either.

there's a little somethin' somethin' about this chocolate that I'm really not enjoying. I just got a big taste of something that I do not appreciate....

ok, 60% gone, time to save the rest for another day.

aftertaste is ok, nothing special, kinda makes me want a pretzel.

Ok, so how do I feel about this product? Well, I can't think of any reason to buy it again, let's start there. Am I satisfied? Close enough. Is this well made? With all the great slow churned, cold churned, double churned flavors out there, this is just plain old, unfancy, there's a reason we dont do this anymore, light ice cream.

On Second Scoop: Well I just finished the last 1/3 of the pint and I'm trying to debate how I feel about it. It's not a bad treat and it was only $2.29. There seems to be a little something lingering in the aftertaste that I just can't nail down. A few more chocolate flavored chips certainly wouldn't hurt. I guess I can see buying this in a pinch, but not as a regular treat (unless you live next to a walgreens maybe)

Other ways to fix your chocolate urge:
Ben & Jerry's Limited Batch Flourless Chocolate Cake
Edy's MAXX Chocolate Fudge Brownie
Stone Ridge Creamery's Phillip's Truffle Shuffle

New! YoCrunch Fruit Parfaits

I know, I know, it's a milk product and it's technically a treat BUT it's not frozen... but I just couldn't resist. Crunchy granola, real strawberries, the word NEW (plus it's still cold even though it's not freezing) I really like the packaging. I was skimming the pudding section when they caught my eye. I should have just bought 1 to be safe, but I bought 2 of the 3 flavors they have out (peach is the third flavor). My daughter helped me unload the groceries and was happy to discover these new treats waiting for her (so the packaging works on the young ones too, at least the ones that love yogurt!). Right off the bat I'm thinking that's not going to be enough granola.
The fruit to yogurt ratio doesn't match the Breyers packaging which implies a 2 to 1 ratio. I'd say this is more of a 3 to 1 ratio at best - the picture above implies it's high, but rotate the cup 180 degrees and it would look like even less (granted you can see the containers before you buy, so i can only complain so much). I must note that the smell is awesome! It's like some wonderful strawberry dessert waiting to be eaten, and that's with the strawberries on the bottom, I haven't even mixed it yet.

I take a sample of the yogurt and it's pretty good, just a bit of a yogurt tang to it. I try to do a few regular scoops but I can't resist, I must mix it all together and get the flavor evened out. It's good! The strawberry mix is sweetening up the combo nicely BUT I wish there was more. I love the idea, and I love the smell, but I wish it was just a bit crunchier and a bit sweeter (i.e. back to the displayed 2:1 ratio)

nutrition is great on this treat. It's just 120 calories (15 from fat), 1.5g of fat (0.5 saturated), 1g fiber, 3g protein. It's not terribly filling, though I can't say I want a second one... well, I was tempted to chase the strawberry one with a blueberry one, maybe tomorrow (we'll save that for the second scoop).

Now this new treat isn't all natural, but this is Breyers so the ingredient list is fairly slim and reserved --- just ditch the potassium sorbate and the modified food starch and we're good to go.... oops, and the red #40 (that explains the bright color).

Now there is a dollar off coupon on the website if you want to try these. Also, I love marketing geniuses: they have a love it or dislike it poll. Well if you don't dislike it, then you have to vote for love it in which case they can now claim that 81% of people "love" the new snack... but that's not really fair is it? There should be at least 3 choices. I would vote for like it, and with a little ratio tweaking, I would vote for love it.

Dubba's (kinda obvious) Tip:
Leave these near the back of the fridge so they are nice and cold!

On Second Scoop: I can't believe I just ate the blueberry parfait rather than digging into a fresh pint of haagen-dazs. I try to reinforce the idea that it's good to have a healthy selection of heavy and light treats at your disposal, and since I polished off my last practical frozen treat last night, well, it was yogurt time. I did enjoy my treat, but like the strawberry one, I wish there was just a bit more blueberry (and a smidge more crunch) in my treat. Actually it wouldn't hurt if the cup was a little bigger too, it's still good though, give them a try.

This is why.....

Housecleaning #2: This is why I need to try harder when reviewing products

You might recognize these as the "NEW" Strawberry Milkshake Poptarts. I like to throw a box of poptarts into the cabinet now and then so I bought these back during an April shopping trip when I also bought the DQ Oreos. I thought it would be cool to do back to back, ice cream themed product posts. Unfortunately when I tried then back in April, the filling was this disgusting, liquidy stuff that I REALLY did not enjoy. I don't do slimy. I was so unamused that I left them in the cabinet and never posted anything.

Well, when I joked that these were so bad that they were "rotting" in the cabinet, I meant it. Now even though these are supposedly good 'til March of 2011, you can see they have gone bad. Whatever was making the filling liquidy has now been sucked up into the sugar frosting -  it's those dark red spots that didn't use to be there. The filling is now dry like a regular poptart. I didn't like them before and I'm sure not about to try them again now.

Ice Cream Cone Holder-A Welcome Idea

Have you noticed how, every time you eat an ice cream cone there is always a bit without noticing that melts and drips on the fingers? Could then get on your clothes, plus we tend to all gather at the base of the cone and make it soaked and sticky.

Some people say that part of the fun of ice cream and when I was a kid would definitely accepted .... but now? well, I must admit that I find myself clutching a tissue paper in availability before I come also served at the counter ice cream!

Tolerate my joy then, when I was recently delivered a cone ice cream cone holder in its paper-free of charge and without asking. It was also stamped with the name of the local ice cream maker .... a nice little marketing ploy and a totally welcome.

Here is a picture of my son chose the ice cream cone of mint choc chip-you can see clearly the holder paper cone.

Note: In Northern Ireland use the term "ice cream cone ice cream instead of poke. labels: Cone holder, ice cream cone ice cream, mint choc chip poke

Housecleaning: Is life really a bowl of Perry's?

Housecleaning #4: When New York ice cream maker Perry's came out with their new line of Gelato, they emailed me and asked if I would like to review some. Ofcourse I would love to try it, especially after the glowing review from Scoopalicious. There's just one problem, Perry's didn't want to send any actual ice cream. They sent me coupons instead even though I told them I'm no where near a place that sells it. I'm not saying I'm offended by free coupons, I'm just tormented that I can't try it.

Note: Perry's normal distribution area is New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia and parts of New England (i.e. not my part). However, if Perry's sounds oddly familiar but you aren't from those areas it might be because they were just on Week 2 of the Apprentice. (I watched week one but I'm debating going any further... there's a certain "character" that makes me not want to watch it)

So, what's my point... Well I have 6 coupons, 3 freebies and 3 discounts. I would like to break them up and send them to 2 or 3 people who will go out, review the products, and then submit the reviews to me for posting here on the scoop. If you are a blogger, you are welcome to post the review on your blog and on the scoop. If you aren't a blogger, we'll just post the review here.

if you are interested, (sorry, coupons have been dispensed). Depending on the responses we'll break up the following coupons accordingly: free pint, free 1.5 quart container, free six pack of novelties, $1 off a pint, and two $2 off a 1.5qt (I'll update this post once the reviewers have been selected)

Ok, make sense? You get free ice cream and the rest of us get to live vicariously through you. It doesnt have to be a super long review, and you are all familiar with the types of pictures I take (you don't have to take a million, one or two will suffice if you wish).

Thanks for your help
Dubba

P.S. Perry's runs the Scoopville blog if you are interested.

For love of ice cream-with Yahoo!

My passion for ice cream goes far beyond just making gelato ice cream recipes, creating and updating my site of ice cream .... I like studying statistics for visitors to the website and understand who is looking for what, where, how and why. Is an amazing thing to get an idea in the minds of people about a certain topic-in this case ICE CREAM.

Study my Google Analytics reports for several years, I know quite a deep into the data layer-where visitors come from, in which numbers, such as the main keywords they use, the content most popular and most popular sources of traffic (search engines, referring sites etc.).

A statistic that has been consistent for a long time now is that Google is the most important search engine to provide traffic to my site; day after day after day, Google outscores all other search engines from a long way ... There's only one day in the past 4 years where another search engine Google has outscored with traffic to my website ... until recently.

On 28 July, I had a ' double take ' when I looked at the stats. There was something I had never seen before, not expecting to see.

Yahoo has posted a huge 28,000 visitors in 24 hours! That is 4.5 times more visitors than Google usually provides daily in this time of year. In addition, I won't cost you a penny!

How come?Well, because I noticed this push massive traffic on the same day, as was happening, I was a bit ' live ' digging and, Yes, I found out how and why did Yahoo!.

I went to http://www.yahoo.com/and there staring me in the face I was ' trend now ' .... a small list of keywords that, according to Yahoo!, were more popular for that day. number 3 was ' ice cream recipes?.So I clicked on the link and sent me to the page of results for the keyword search Yahoo!.The number 1 was my site-bingo! I had found the answer to the puzzle. very simply, people using Yahoo that day were only intrigued by because ice cream recipes would be popular and, assuming it could be some interesting news, click through and visited the first site listed-mine! So there you have ... simple and honest curiosity was the key-and what's important, but it was from people who perhaps think never normally ice cream recipes.

So, if someone tells you not to seriously in your Internet marketing strategy of Yahoo!, stop and reconsider. now you know better. thank you labels of Yahoo!: Analytics, ice cream making, internet marketing, yahoo

Recipe for ice cream display temptation

I came across this display ice cream cone was the small town of Seahouses Northumberland coast of England.

Stood outside of one of those old-fashioned English pubs that seem to be a relic from.

What I loved this ice cream point of sale material was its impact.

BREW a lot of contrast of colors and textures-a cone style waffles, ice-cream scoop a curl of different plus with melba cream and raspberry sauce.

I'm not sure I could eat that combination ice cream rich in real life, but which certainly caught the eye of bystanders! labels: ice cream cones, ice cream, ice cream bars display

A lifelong love of ice cream

I've written many times before about how I grew up enjoying ice cream as special treatment and with a sense of fun.

Well, the family tradition continues throughout all three generations of my family who are still alive, by my mother to me in my son. here's my mother (Betty), enjoying an ice cream cone, while on a recent walk with us. Note the experience of years of managing ice cream cones-tissue paper gently wrapped around the base of the ice cream cone and a splash of gelato everywhere on his clothing:

I am pleased to share this picture with my Blog readers, especially ice cream today-what is 79th birthday of my mother.

Sonic sauce-too hot for ice cream!

Today we spent a beautiful couple hours in the company of two very dear friends-Shirley and Don (don't forget their Tina Jack Russell!)

We sat in the Sun in summer outside enjoying what is always great and fun conversation, but to add joy, Don brought an array of "nibbles", which included some super cheeses, oatcakes, a bowl of homemade Russian salad and a big plate of tortilla chips. Li has shown in the table, Don has proudly announced that we had to try some of his depressions in home with tortilla chips. He placed on the table two bowls of cali more colourful, that you have ever seen in your life! Here are:

One was a hot chili dip, sweet and others ... Well, he didn't give it a name. Has challenged us to guess what it was. I tasted carefully ... There was definitely some fruit there somewhere along with a strong taste of mint and, Yes, mustard, although not strong.Clearly enjoying our guess, Don smiled and then revealed that the fruit thereof was of mango and Dijon mustard. alongside these and Mint was a little caraway, then the fabulous color color that complimented the mangoes. Was delicious-mite still spicy, mint and fruity!

We came out after having enjoyed an afternoon of super-but still none the wiser as for the name of the dip sauce creamy yellow. Thus, Shirley and Don competences in technology and sonic horns are fundamental ingredients of dip mango, mint * and mustard ... I'm going to call the plunging of Sonic 3 M.

* If you like mint, I have a mint ice cream recipe great-not that recommends that use the plunge of 3 M with it!
